ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) Treatment
One of the most commonly occurring sports injuries requiring orthopedic surgery and a significant amount of recovery time is an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear. ACL tears, caused by overextending the ligament in the knee usually during a twisting movement or sudden stop, are known to cause intense knee pain. While athletes are more susceptible to tearing the ACL, older and non–active patients can also experience the injury.
ACL injuries often require orthopedic surgery to fix the damaged ligament; however, non-operative procedures such as activity modification and physical therapy may also be employed to reduce pain and improve strength. After ACL repair surgery, strength, balance and flexibility will gradually be built back to pre–injury levels with the help of a physical therapist.
