Total Knee Replacement
The most common joint affliction is osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease. Osteoarthritis can be caused by a number of different factors that affect joint function, including wear and tear, traumatic injury, or the effects of aging on the joint itself. These factors often combine to cause chronic pain in the knee joint, which may lead to total knee replacement surgery.
During total knee replacement surgery, the damaged knee joint is removed and replaced by a manmade joint that replicates the functions of a healthy knee joint. The ends of the femur, or thighbone, and tibia, or shinbone, are removed along with any damaged or worn cartilage that has been affecting movement.
Knee replacement surgery has evolved over the years to become one of the safest types of orthopedic surgery. More than 90 percent of patients make a full recovery and return to the same activity and full range of motion that they enjoyed before developing knee problems.
Hip Pain & Osteoarthritis
When osteoarthritis affects the hip joint, mobility can suffer tremendously. The hip joint is involved in almost all forms of motion, from sitting up in bed to running a marathon. Osteoarthritis can cause the cartilage cushioning the hip joint to degenerate, causing the bones of the hip and upper leg to grind together and make every step more painful than the last.
Anatomy of the Hip Joint
The hip joint is formed by the intersection of two bones in the pelvis: a ball at the upper end of the thighbone, called the femoral head, which fits into a rounded socket, called the acetabulum. Cartilage covers the femoral head, providing cushioning and allowing the femoral head to rotate smoothly and painlessly through the acetabulum. When this cartilage is worn away by osteoarthritis or damaged by a traumatic injury, total hip replacement surgery may be the best way to restore a full range of motion to the damaged joint.
Total Hip Replacement Surgery
The damaged femoral head is removed and replaced with a prosthesis that mimics the natural bone’s functionality. The acetabulum is resurfaced and fitted with a metal or ceramic cup during total hip replacement surgery. The new prosthetic ball and socket will restore the joint’s full range of motion and eliminate any joint pain caused by osteoarthritis or other trauma to the hip joint.
