Knee Pain Treatment | Metairie & Destrehan
The knee joint supports the entire weight of the body on a daily basis, often receiving added stress during athletic activities like jogging or running. The causes of chronic knee pain can vary from a traumatic injury that snaps the ACL to the slow degradation associated with osteoarthritis of the knee. Orthopedic surgical intervention used to correct maladies of the knee joint often utilizes arthroscopic surgical techniques and other minimally invasive procedures. These innovative procedures help minimize the impact and recovery time associated with knee joint surgery.
The decades of experience with sports medicine, arthroscopic surgery and physical therapy techniques, shared by the orthopedic experts at the Pontchartrain Bone and Joint Clinic allows doctors and support staff to effectively treat the root causes of knee joint pain, getting patients back on their feet as quickly as possible. Listed below are some of the most common knee injuries treated at the Pontchartrain Bone & Joint Clinic.
Osteoarthritis of the Knee
Often caused by years of overuse and stress of a joint, osteoarthritis affects millions of Americans every year and is the most common type of arthritis to affect the knee joint. The knee joint is particularly susceptible to the effects of osteoarthritis due to the continuous stress placed on the knees. If the damage is confined to one side of the knee, surgeons can use arthroscopic techniques to “clean out” the damaged cartilage and restore proper function to the knee joint. However, if the cartilage damage has spread throughout the knee, total knee joint replacement surgery may be the best option.
Adolescent Knee Pain: Osgood-Schlatter Disease
One of the main causes of pain among growing adolescents is a condition called Osgood-Schlatter disease, which causes pain and inflammation in the knee joint. Osgood-Schlatter disease affects the tendons under the kneecap as a result of overuse, and is commonly found in adolescents who run or play contact sports, such as soccer or football. Patients generally respond to conservative treatments like anti-inflammatory drugs and physical therapy, aimed at supporting the knee joint and reducing pain and swelling.
Runner’s Knee
Runner’s knee is caused by repeated stress to the knee joint during long distance runs or high intensity sprints. Runner’s knee starts as a persistent pain beneath the patella, or kneecap, especially when putting downward stress on the knee joint while walking downstairs or squatting. This type of patellofemoral pain can occur for a number of reasons: overuse, a traumatic injury, dislocation of the kneecap or problems with the thigh muscles. If the problems worsen or persist, arthroscopic surgery and a kneecap realignment procedure may be the best treatment option.
