The shoulder is an intricate joint. Like the hip, the shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint; however, the ball is larger than the socket. While it is the most moveable joint in the body, its design makes it rather unstable. Muscles, tendons, and cartilage connect together and help stabilize the joint and give it a wide range of motion. These muscles and tendons include the rotator cuff, made up of four muscles and tendons, and the bursae, sac-like structures that allow smooth gliding between the bone, muscle and tendon. The bursae also cushion and protect the rotator cuff muscles from the upper part of the shoulder blade.
Shoulder injuries come in many forms and can vary in intensity and duration. Strenuous overhead work, a spill from a bicycle, a bout with arthritis, or even sleeping incorrectly on the sensitive jointcan all cause pain in the shoulder. Some injuries or conditions result in temporary shoulder pain that can be treated with rest, physical therapy, or strengthening exercises, but other more serious issues will need surgical treatment.
Because of the complicated nature of the shoulder joint, injuries can be caused by a number of different ailments, including rotator cuff tears, tendonitis, bursitis, and various forms of arthritis. The orthopaedic surgeons at Pontchartrain Bone & Joint Clinic can properly diagnose your shoulder pain condition and recommend a treatment plan to get you back to your active lifestyle.
Rotator Cuff Tear
Rotator cuff tears are common injuries of the shoulder joint and affect people of all ages and activity levels. Made up of muscles and tendons that cover the shoulder joint, the rotator cuff provides strength and stability for the shoulder. A rotator cuff tear can occur when the joint undergoes a traumatic injury. This is often accompanied by a popping sound, as well as a loss of strength and control in the arm. Rotator cuff tears can be corrected through surgical intervention, with arthroscopic surgery often being the best option.
Tendonitis of the Shoulder
Tendonitis can affect any or all of the tendons running through and along the shoulder joint. Tendons play an important part in shoulder function, connecting muscles to bones or other tissues while allowing for strength and control of the shoulder and arm. Tendonitis can occur over time in tendons that have been stretched or overworked and can be caused by a traumatic injury, such as a rotator cuff tear.
Shoulder Bursitis
Bursitis typically develops as a result of a rotator cuff injury, and causes inflammation of the joint bursae. The bursae are a set of fluid-filled sacs that help the shoulder joint move properly without friction. When the bursae become irritated, pain develops in the shoulder as well as stiffness and a limited range of motion. For this reason, bursitis is commonly referred to as “frozen shoulder syndrome” and requires extensive treatment to alleviate pain.
Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis & Post-traumatic Arthritis
Arthritis can affect any joint in the body, and the shoulder joint is no exception. Arthritis of the shoulder joint is generally the result of years of wear, tear, and stress on the shoulder joint. With the constant pain of arthritis limiting the range of motion, shoulder joint arthritis sufferers often experience problems associated with inactivity of the joint, including stiffening and loss of strength.
